Wine Tourism in Summer: Why Visiting a Canarian Winery Is the Perfect Plan This June

Something shifts when summer arrives in Tenerife. The air smells different, the light lingers longer, and the terraces overlooking Mount Teide become the best place in the world to enjoy a glass of wine. If you’re wondering what to do in Tenerife this June or July — or if you’ve been meaning to have a truly different experience on the islands — wine tourism might be exactly what you’re looking for.

At Bodegas Monje, we have been growing volcanic wines in the north of Tenerife for generations. But beyond the wine itself, we have built a space where locals and visitors can connect with Canarian culture, landscape and identity. And summer, though rarely associated with the world of wine, is an extraordinary time to experience it.

Why Is Summer a Perfect Time for Wine Tourism in Tenerife?

When people think about visiting a winery, they usually picture autumn: the harvest, warm earthy tones, the cool morning air. And yes, all of that exists. But Tenerife plays by its own rules.

The Atlantic climate of the Canary Islands makes summer far more comfortable than on the Spanish mainland. Temperatures in the north of the island, where the main wineries are located, rarely exceed 26 °C during the day. The sea breeze and the shade of the vineyards make a visit to the countryside genuinely pleasant — nothing like the scorching heat found in other wine regions at the same time of year.

What’s more, the harvest in Tenerife comes later than in most of Spain. Indigenous grape varieties such as Listán Negro and Bastardo Negro are typically picked between August and September, which means that in June and July the vineyards are in full vegetative growth: green, vibrant and wonderfully photogenic. It is the ideal moment to walk among the vines, understand the cycle of wine and take in the volcanic landscape that makes Canarian wines so unique.

Add to that the fact that summer brings together locals looking for something different, mainland Spanish tourists seeking meaningful experiences, and international travellers discovering the islands for the first time — and you have all the ingredients for a winery visit that becomes one of the sharpest memories of the trip.

What You Can Do at Bodegas Monje: Experiences for Every Kind of Visitor

There is no single type of visitor at Bodegas Monje, and that is why we don’t offer a single type of experience. Depending on who you come with and what you are looking for, there is a different way to live the winery.

If You’re Visiting the Islands for the First Time: Wine Tasting and Volcanic Scenery

For those visiting Tenerife for the first time or wanting to take home an authentically Canarian experience, our wine tastings are the perfect starting point. Our sessions combine the tasting of volcanic wines — made from grape varieties that barely exist outside the archipelago — with an introduction to the soil, climate and story behind each bottle.

You don’t need to know anything about wine to enjoy it. In fact, the best moments often come when someone who has never thought about food and wine pairing discovers that a wine can taste of stone, sea salt or seasonal fruit.

Sessions are held in both Spanish and English, and can be combined with a guided tour of the winery and vineyards.

If You’re Looking for a Special Plan or a Gift: Pairing Brunch

The Bodegas Monje pairing brunch is, by far, our most requested experience on summer weekends — and for a very simple reason: it is hard to find a plan that brings together enjoyment, calm and quality so naturally.

At weekends, the winery setting is transformed to offer a generous spread of local products: artisan bread, Canarian cheeses, cured meats and dishes made with seasonal ingredients. All accompanied by a selection of Monje wines chosen so that every bite finds its perfect match.

It is the ideal gift for a couple, a birthday or any occasion that deserves something a little more special. If you’re looking for ideas for a gift experience in Tenerife, this is one of the options we cherish most — and one that those who try it for the first time tend to remember for a long time.

If You’re Coming as a Group or Are Simply Curious About Wine: Themed Tastings and #ViveMonje

For groups of friends, colleagues or families who want something beyond a conventional visit, the #ViveMonje experience programme offers a way to explore the world of wine with a much freer, more festive spirit.

Our summer themed tastings are designed to dig into specific aspects of Canarian wine: the differences between indigenous varieties, the influence of volcanic soil on flavour, or the way wind and altitude shape the character of a grape. They are participatory sessions — lots of conversation, very few rules.

Bastardo Negro — our star grape of the summer — is often the thread that runs through many of these experiences. A variety that had nearly disappeared, recovered by Bodegas Monje, producing wines of unmistakable character: fresh, aromatic, with an elegant acidity that makes them perfect for the warmer months.
